The development of knowledge management and innovation at Colombia’s National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences serves as a strategic process to support its mission and drive innovations that enhance forensic service delivery to key stakeholders. This requires a theoretical review and an analysis of the implications of integrating knowledge management within a highly specialized public institution. This article explores fundamental concepts such as knowledge, information, knowledge management, and innovation. It revisits Nonaka’s theoretical framework and examines how the Administrative Department of the Public Function of Colombia has interpreted and adopted the concept of knowledge management and innovation for implementation in public institutions within the Executive Branch. Finally, the article outlines the Institute’s historical efforts in knowledge generation, human talent development, forensic knowledge dissemination, and transfer. It also identifies the challenges of embedding knowledge management and innovation as a cross-cutting dimension within the framework of the Institutional Strategic Plan 2023 -2026.
